Under fire for turning a blind eye to illegal constructions, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) now claims that it will re-examine around 2.7 lakh files of illegal properties approved under the impact fee regulations. Officials have been instructed to re-examine these files and 5,000 could be taken up in the first round.
SMC has started realizing the gravity of situation only after the devastating fire in Takshashila Arcade on May 24 snuffed out 22 innocent lives. The officers have even carried out a survey across the city in which constructions legalized after payment of impact fee were marked.
Surat had received highest number of 3.07 lakh applications under the impact fee regulations, with one lakh from Varachha alone. It is suspected there still exist a number of illegal constructions and also many without fire safety in Varachha and the civic body plans to go after them.
