In a stark example of how dangerously children are ferried by school vans, three of the 22 kids stuffed into one particular vehicle fell out of it when the driver took a sharp turn in the Nikol area of the city.
A girl of around 16 suffered injuries where as other two kids, aged around 8, were not injured as they were sitting in lap of the girl and fell on her, a police official said.
This incident also exposed how a 2016 Gujarat high court order was not implemented, as it had directed the authorities to strictly follow rules introduced in 2006 restraining school rickshaws from carrying more than 8 kids and 12 children in a van. After the Nikol incident, education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama ordered an inquiry into it.
An FIR was lodged with G Traffic Police against the driver, Kiran Kalu Desai, 30, a resident of Nikol.
A police official said that girl, Kirti Thakor, a resident of Nikol and a student at Panchamrut International School in Nikol, suffered and a minor injury to her shoulder after the trio fell out of the moving vehicle.
