Idols of the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha of different shapes, sizes and colours were installed at homes, public spaces and on the streets as the ten-day Ganesh festival began across Maharashtra. Security was tight as some members of the Hindu right-wing Sanatan Sanstha confessed to planning bomb blasts at festival venues.

"Leave of all police personnel were cancelled in Mumbai and 15,000 security personnel including state reserve police, riot control force and the bomb disposal squad have been deployed on the roads," according to a police spokesperson. The police also installed CCTV cameras at beachfronts where devotees are expected to immerse idols of Lord Ganesh from Friday.
