The Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) on Monday staged a walkout from Kerala Assembly in protest against denial of an adjournment motion on farmers suicide and lack of a proper loan waiver scheme.
Seeking the leave of the House to move an adjournment motion in this regard, IC Balakrishnan of Congress said several farmers committed suicide due to debt and crop loss in the recent period.
The Opposition member demanded the Government to waive agricultural loans on the lines of Congress-ruled states, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
In his reply, Agricultural Minister VS Sunilkumar said the department was planning to agricultural loans upto two lakh through the Kerala State Farmers' Debt Relief Commission.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan the cooperative banks in the state will be excluded from SARFAESI Act, which allows banks and other financial institution to auction residential or commercial properties to recover loans.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said 18 farmers committed suicide after the Left Government came into power this time.
The farmers were facing crisis following the natural calamities, Ockhi cyclone, Floods and drought in the recent past, the Agricultural Minister added.
He also listed out a series of packages, including financial aid of Rs 204.99 crore during the August floods, implemented for the benefit of farmers. Rs 51 crore was earmarked for crop insurance, he added.
The morotorium for the loans taken by farmers was extended till December 31. He also assured stringent action against banks which create problems for farmers.
The Minister said 10 farmers committed suicide in Idukki and five in Wayanad due to financial crisis.
Following the Minister's reply, Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan denied permission to move the adjournment motion. In protest against the Government stand, the Opposition members staged the walkout from the Assembly.
