Six excise and taxation officers (ETOs) recently deputed in Ludhiana are in the dock following a “fact-finding preliminary enquiry” that held them guilty of “misconduct and evasion of professional responsibility”. Over a dozen firms, which either existed only on paper or were allowed to function “without following due procedure”, claimed tax credit worth Rs500 crore.

The six officers, recently attached with the headquarters in Patiala, who reportedly allowed the ghost firms to manipulate and issue invoices are — Neetu Bawa in Fatehgarh Sahib, Anish Sharma, Shailender Singh, Ved Prakash Jakhar, Tanul Goyal and Mukti Gupta, all in Ludhiana.

The probe, conducted by the investigation wing headed by Additional Excise and Taxation Commissioner Kumar Saurabh Raj, has found glaring lapses on part of these officers and the probe report is now pending with the Chief Minister’s Office for next course of action.
