The CPI has decided to support the Congress candidate in the Shahkot byelection. The decision was taken in a meeting of the state executive of the party held here on Sunday. The party decided that any candidate from secular forces, who will be in position to defeat the SAD-BJP candidate, should be supported, a senior leader said. The meeting was attended by 27 members of the state executive and presided over by senior leader Dr Joginder Dayal.
State secretary Bant Brar presented the agenda regarding the byelection. The consensus arrived among CPI leadership was that AAP was not in position to defeat the SAD-BJP candidate, so the only option was to support the Congress.
Whether the CPI will campaign openly for the Congress, the state leadership will decide in consultation with the district unit.
