The state government has decided to issue chargesheet against 14 senior jail officers for allowing two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists lodged in Punjab jails to contact their handlers in Pakistan.
In May, the Jail Department had written to the government “to take strict action” against these officers, including a serving DIG-level officer, who were prima facie found negligent during their postings in three jails where the terrorists were lodged.
Jail Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said, “From now on, any case of negligence on the part of jail officials in allowing mobile use from jails will invite registration of an FIR.”
“In this case, we have decided to chargesheet them under Section 10 of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970,” said Randhawa.
Earlier, a preliminary probe conducted by IG (Prisons) Roop Kumar Arora had indicted 14 senior jail officers who were posted in three jails between 2009 and 2011 when the terrorists got easy access to mobile phones.
