The state MLAs will now be allowed to declare their immovable assets till January 31 of every year. The state Cabinet today approved an amendment to the Punjab Legislative Assembly (Salaries and Allowances of Members) Act, 1942, correcting a previous clause in Section 3-AAA of the Act that stated that the declaration has to be made by January 1 of every calendar year.
After the anomaly was pointed out by the Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, the amendment was brought today. The proposal will now be sent to the Legal Remembrancer (LR) to prepare the draft of the Bill, which the Cabinet has authorised the Chief Minister to approve.
The Council of Ministers had on March 18, 2017, decided that all MLAs and MPs would be required to declare their immovable properties as on January 1 every year. The Cabinet had also decided that for 2017-18, this should be done by July 1, 2017.
Even as the amendment to the Act has been brought, Speaker KP Rana, Deputy Speaker Ajaib Singh Bhatti, former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and former Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal are among the 15 persons who have already filed their declaration on January 1 this year.
