Tension gripped the local MR Government College Fazilka today when a scuffle broke out between a lecturer and protesting students. The lecturer, Pardeep Singh, was asking students to hold their protest outside the college when they allegedly gheraoed and thrashed him. He sustained injuries on his head and hand.

On the other hand, a student, Harpreet Singh, alleged that the professor assaulted them along with some other people, due to which he sustained injuries. Later, the students took out a procession in the town. College staff have alleged that some students had been creating nuisance on the institute premises for some time in a “bid to dominate” other students. The students had been protesting for the last few days against the college management for demanding fees from SC category students despite fee exemption.

College principal Dr Gurnam Chand said names of those students who did not pay their fees had been struck off and some students were staging the protest without any valid reason. The police reached the spot but they reportedly failed to handle the situation. City police SHO Prem Nath said they were investigating.
