Ahead of the Shahkot bypoll, the Congress has strategized its fight with the SAD as a “man-to-man defence in a hockey match”, in which each player of the rival team is covered by a player with similar capabilities.
Akalis have divided the constituency into 44 zones, each to be led by a former minister, MLA, former MLA and so on. The Congress too followed the same pattern — 44 zones under MPs, ministers, MLAs and former MLAs.
The planning has been made in such a way that the SAD-Congress rivals from various constituencies have been paired in the same areas of Shahkot. Since former minister Upinderjit Kaur was covering Gidderpindi and surrounding areas of Lohian, so is now her Congress rival from Sultanpur Lodhi and MLA Navtej Cheema. In villages covered by Vardev Mann, who contested the Guruharsahai seat for SAD, the Congress has fielded its Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Sodhi. Rampura Phul minister Gurpreet Kangar has been assigned duties in Malsian, where SAD’s Sikander Maluka has been deputed.
Cheema said, “I know the weaknesses and strengths of my rival Upinderjit Kaur. It is interesting to work against one another on a new turf.”
