The Counter Intelligence Wing and the Rural Police today arrested a gangster of the Saini group of Gurdaspur for his alleged involvement in the killing of a 27-year-old man and injuring two of his aides on Diwali last year. The accused, Gurpreet, alias Kaka (20), is a resident of Dinanagar. A pistol, cartridges and two magazines were seized from his possession.
AIG Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said they had received a tip-off that the gangster carrying some illegal weapons was heading to Jalandhar by road. He said he shared information with Jalandhar Rural SSP Navjot Mahal and a joint team was constituted. “The team carried out a search near Jallowal Chowk on the national highway and nabbed Gurpreet,” he said.
During preliminary interrogation, Gurpreet revealed that his gang was headed by Devinder Saini, an absconder. “On Diwali, he along with Devinder and others had allegedly shot dead Mukhwinder Singh,” Khakh said, adding that a clash between the victim, his brother and the Saini group had led to the killing.
The main conspirators in the case, Devinder Saini and Gurpreet Kaka, are yet to be arrested. Khakh said after the murder, the accused had fled to Patna, where they stayed for two months. They had returned to strike again. “There is a feud between the Saini group and the Sukh Bhikhariwal group and the former was planning to eliminate some members of the Bhikhariwal group,” the officer said.
